Fencing and Garden Walls in Cornwall
Fencing and garden walls define your property boundary, secure your garden, and frame the landscaping inside. In Cornwall, they also have to survive salt-laden Atlantic air, frost cycles, and the prevailing south-westerly winds that flatten cheap timber panels in their first winter. The material choice, the post depth, the mortar mix on stonework — all of it matters more on a coastal site than it would inland.
We work in timber fencing, brick and block walls, bricklaying and blockwork feature walls, Cornish granite stone-faced walls, and composite panel fencing. Whatever boundary you need, it gets specified for the weather it'll actually face.

Fencing and Wall Options
Timber fencing
featheredge close-board, lap panels, hit-and-miss, picket. Pressure-treated softwood standard, with hardwood and Western Red Cedar for premium projects. Posts concrete-set to 600mm+ depth in Cornwall ground.
Composite fencing
recycled material panels with timber-effect finish. 20+ year lifespan, no painting or staining, holds up to Cornwall coastal weather well.
Brick boundary walls
clay or concrete brick, single or one-and-a-half brick width, capped with coping stones. 1.2-2.4m heights typical. Foundation work included.
Concrete block walls (rendered)
fastest masonry option, finished with smooth or textured render to match the house.
Cornish granite / stone-faced walls
natural Cornish stone facing on a concrete block core, or solid stone where the budget allows. Long-life, low-maintenance, distinctly Cornish character.
Retaining walls (structural)
for sloping plots, level changes, road frontage. Sized to retain the soil load with drainage built in. Concrete block or stone-faced. See bricklaying and blockwork for the structural detail.
Mixed boundaries
common Cornwall solution. Brick or stone plinth with timber or composite panels on top — combines the durability of masonry at ground level with the flexibility of fencing above.

Benefits of a Properly Built Cornwall Boundary
Your boundary survives the south-westerly.
Posts set to the correct depth, panels rated for wind exposure, mortar mix matched to coastal conditions. We don't build for show; we build for the weather it'll actually face.
No wall leaning or cracking in year two.
Garden and retaining walls fail when they sit on inadequate foundations — we dig to suit the wall height and ground conditions, not to suit the shortest day.
No frost-spalled brick after the first winter.
Cornwall ground sees frost cycles every winter, so brick selection, mortar mix, and coping stone are all chosen for frost resistance.
Your retaining wall doesn't bow or topple.
Every retaining wall over 600mm gets weep holes and a drainage layer behind it, so built-up water pressure doesn't push the wall over down the line.
No planning trouble after it's built.
Walls and fences over 2m typically need planning consent (or 1m if facing a highway) — we flag exactly what applies to your boundary before we start.
Our Fencing and Wall Process
Site visit. We mark out the line, look at ground conditions, talk through material options, take measurements.
Written quote in 48 hours. Itemised — excavation, foundations, materials, labour.
Excavation and foundations. For masonry walls: trench excavated to suit wall height (typically 600-900mm deep concrete strip). For timber fencing: post holes to 600mm+ depth.
Wall built or fence panels installed. Masonry built to specified bond pattern, coped at the top. Fence panels secured to concrete-set posts.
Drainage (retaining walls only). Weep holes and drainage layer installed behind retaining walls.
Pointing or finishing. Masonry walls pointed to agreed profile. Timber fences treated. Composite fences clipped in.
Site clean-up. Excavated material removed if not needed for backfill. Boundary cleaned down.

What Drives the Cost of a Fence or Garden Wall
Timber fencing is the lowest-cost boundary; composite fencing sits above it; a brick garden wall costs more again; and a Cornish stone-faced wall or a drained retaining wall is the premium end. A mixed brick-plinth-and-panel boundary lands in the middle. Rather than quote a number before we've seen the line, here's what moves the price:
- Material — treated timber is cheapest, then composite, then brick, with Cornish stone the dearest.
- Height and length — taller or longer boundaries need deeper foundations or posts and more material.
- Foundations and post depth — a masonry wall needs a concrete strip foundation; fence posts need concrete-setting to depth.
- Retaining versus boundary — a retaining wall needs weep holes and a drainage layer, which adds to the build.
- Access for excavation — whether a digger can reach the line or it has to be dug by hand.
Cornwall sits a little above the national average because of material transport. We give a fixed-price quote after a site visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How tall can I build a fence or garden wall without planning permission?+
In most cases, walls and fences up to 2m don't need planning consent. If your boundary faces a highway, the limit drops to 1m. Listed buildings and conservation areas have stricter rules. We check the specific situation at the site visit and flag if planning is needed.
What's the best fencing material for Cornwall's coastal weather?+
Composite fencing has the longest lifespan (20+ years) with no maintenance. Pressure-treated timber close-board lasts 15-20 years if well-installed and maintained. Stone or brick walls last indefinitely with basic re-pointing every 30-50 years. For exposed coastal sites, a masonry plinth with timber or composite panels on top is a common Cornwall compromise.
Do I need foundations for a garden wall?+
Yes for any masonry wall — typical foundation is a concrete strip 600-900mm deep, twice as wide as the wall. Timber fences don't need foundations but need posts concrete-set to 600mm+ depth in Cornwall ground. Skimping on either is the most common cause of garden wall and fence failure.
Can you build a Cornish stone wall?+
Yes. We work in Cornish granite and other natural stone, either as facing on a concrete block core (most common) or as solid stone walls (premium). Cornish stone walls last indefinitely, weather beautifully, and look distinctly Cornish — but they cost more than brick or block alternatives.
How long does fencing or wall installation take?+
A 10m timber fence takes 1-2 days. A 10m brick garden wall takes 3-7 days. A 10m stone-faced wall takes 5-10 days. Retaining walls with drainage take longer. We give a clear timeline before we start.
Will the work be messy or disruptive?+
Boundary work is one of the less disruptive jobs — it's outside and rarely affects the inside of the house. There's some excavation and spoil for masonry walls and concrete-set posts, which we clear as we go. We keep the area tidy, keep your access clear, and sweep down at the end.
What deposit or payment schedule do you work on?+
For a fence or garden wall we normally take a deposit to cover materials at the start, then the balance on completion once you've checked the finished boundary. On larger retaining-wall or structural jobs, payments can be staged against progress. No large cash sum up front.
